On the 40th Anniversary of the Chornobyl Disaster, TWG Cultural Fund, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute of America, presents a program of music by composers Barvinsky, Frolyak, Likhuta, Lysenko and Yakymenko. Sponsored by Self Reliance Financial FCU
Ukrainian born violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv was named one
of the "major artists of our time" by Fanfare Magazine, and
is a highly celebrated soloist, chamber musician, and
educator. She is Artistic Director of Music at the Ukrainian
Institute of America and Professor of Violin and Viola and
Head of Strings at University of Connecticut.
Igor Leschishin, born in Ukraine, has been Principal
Oboist of The Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra
since 1998. From 1996 until 1998 he played in The New
World Symphony Orchestra in Miami under the direction of
Michael Tilson Thomas. He participated in the
Tanglewood, Grant Park,
Lincoln Center, and Spoleto (USA and Italy) Music
Festivals.
Performances by cellist Darrett Adkins have been called
“heroic,” “stunning,” “intensely involving” (NY Times) and
“fiery” (Boston Globe). Many cello concerti have been
dedicated to him, and he has performed many New York
and World Premieres in addition to performing the
standard repertoire of concerti around the world.
Pianist Dr. Melvin Chen, who holds master's degrees in
piano and violin from Julliard, and Yale and Harvard
degrees in chemistry and physics, serves as Director of
the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Yale Summer
School of Music. His many highly praised recordings and
solo and chamber performances throughout the US,
Canada, and Asia have been featured on radio and
television.
